Tips for Solving Cryptogram Puzzles

Single-letter words:In English, the only single-letter words are A and I. If you see a lone symbol, it must be one of those two.
Apostrophes narrow options:A pattern like symbol-apostrophe-symbol almost always ends in T or S. Common contractions: DON'T, CAN'T, IT'S, THAT'S.
Double letters:Look for repeated adjacent symbols. Common English doubles: LL, SS, EE, OO, TT, FF, PP. This can unlock entire words quickly.
Letter frequency:The most common letters in English are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R. The symbol that appears most often is almost certainly E.
Common short words:Two-letter words are limited: OF, TO, IN, IS, IT, ON, AT, BY, OR, AN. Three-letter: THE, AND, FOR, ARE, BUT, NOT.
Word endings:Look for -ING, -TION, -MENT, -NESS, -ABLE, -ED, -LY, -ER. These suffixes appear in a huge proportion of English text.
The quote structure helps:Cryptogram quotes are real sentences with punctuation. Commas, periods, and question marks are not encoded and give you word boundary clues.
Work outward from confirmed letters:Once you have 4-5 confirmed letters, fill them into every word in the puzzle. Partially revealed words become solvable by context.
